Chanel Rouge Captivant & Rouge Irregulier Rouge Allure Laques Reviews & Swatches

by Joseph K. Clark

Rouge Captivant (86)

Chanel Rouge Captivant (86) Rouge Allure Laque (2020) ($40.00 for 0.18 oz.) is a vivid, ruby red with cool, blue undertones and a satin finish. The texture was lightweight, smooth, and almost balm-like as it was pretty creamy, thin, and emollient, but it developed and set to a more transfer-resistant finish that was lightly tacky and did not slide around during wear.

It had rich color coverage in a single pass. It applied evenly and quickly along my lips, especially around the edges, without settling into my lip lines or feathering over time. It stayed on well for eight hours, left a stain behind, and was hydrating over time.

Formula Overview

Chanel Rouge

$40.00/0.18 oz. – $222.22 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have an “ultra-intense color with long-wearing satin shine in one swipe” that lasts up to “12 hours” and is comfortable for up to “8 hours.” Most shades I tested had more medium to semi-opaque coverage in one layer, which could be built up by applying a second layer.

The consistency felt more emollient and like a liquid lip balm initially. Within 30 seconds, it transformed into something slightly thicker, denser, and tackier, which helped keep the product in place better. I also felt like, over time, the color seemed to look more even and was less likely to sit in my lip lines, but this could take an hour or longer to be visible.

It felt relatively lightweight and had more of that “satin shine” the brand claimed after an hour or two of wear, and it felt significantly less tacky. Other formulas on the market have a similar start and finish in feel (going from something thinner to something thicker and tackier), but the tackiness wearing down faster with Chanel’s formula reduced longevity significantly.

The color lasted five to seven hours, with more resounding, pigmented, and brighter shades lasting longer than lighter ones. They did not survive that well through a meal, and I’d expect better survivability for something marketed as lasting up to 12 hours. They were very comfortable and hydrating to wear, though, and they left my lips in better condition after wearing different shades over a few days. They had a floral scent but didn’t yield a noticeable taste for me.

And no, these are nothing like the previously-released Rouge Allure Laque formula. While they share the same name, they’re different types of formulas. The older recipe has more like a literal liquid lipstick, so it was creamier and thicker, and the procedure didn’t change or set after a minute or so; at most, it wore down to a more satin to semi-matte finish after a few hours of wear (as any glossier lipstick might).

Rouge Irregulier (87)

Chanel Rouge Irregular (87) Rouge Allure Laque (2020) ($40.00 for 0.18 oz.) is a deep red with warm, brown undertones and a satin sheen. It’s an opaque color payoff adhered evenly and smoothly across my lips without emphasizing lip texture or settling into my lip lines.

The consistency felt lightweight, smooth, and more emollient initially, but it dried down to a more transfer-resistant finish that had no slip but was light and comfortable to wear. It lasted for six and a half hours and felt moisturizing while worn.
